Happy Halloween!

One year ago, "Something Wicked" released, and three years ago, "Cry Wolf" released on Halloween. Halloween is obviously one of my favorite holidays for that reason alone.

And today, I am happy to announce my short story "The Night Shift" is part of a Halloween anthology that released today, too! The anthology was an initiative of the authors of the Here Be Magic blog, and I'm grateful to have been included. We publish our works under the pen name Hera B. Magic. This time, our stories had to feature cats. You know I had to get in on that!

Please download the anthology here. I mentioned it's free, right?

Also, I want to say a HUGE thank you to Between the Sheets PR for arranging a blog tour for my book SPIRITED AWAY this week, and I am also very grateful to all of the blogs who've agreed to host me. Check out each these blogs for reviews, excerpts and a giveaway!

Now here's a sneak peak at the first chapter of "We've Always Got New York"!!

Chapter 1- Amalia

I could tell by the look on her face that she was expecting something from me. She was expecting something to be different. For me to be, in some way, changed.

I’m Amalia Hastings, and on August 20th at 9:17 pm, I was home.

Home. The word seemed funny to me because I didn’t have a home to go back to. I moved out of my apartment right before leaving for Brazil and after my friend-with-benefits, Michael, showed up at my apartment, asking me to stay. I hadn’t thought it through properly; I just knew I didn’t want to live in that apartment anymore. Before my trip to Brazil I packed up what little stuff I owned and put it in storage for when I returned, assuming I would deal with it then. Well, “then” has become “now”. So for tonight I was staying with my best friend Cassandra. Who was currently waving at me.
I knew what she wanted. She wanted stories. Juicy ones that involved hot hookups on the sand. She wanted to see pictures. Pictures of the places I went, the food I ate, and the hot guys I met. She wanted me to run up to her in a sun dress, hair braided and skin tanned, and explain, no, to pontificate, to her how life-changing my trip was. She wanted me to playfully link her arm around mine and gush about how amazing it all was. How I was changed forever. That I had a new appreciation for life, food, and music. She wanted me to tell her that I would never be the same.

But this isn’t the movies and I’m not Julia Roberts.

The florescent lights above me flickered, making the airport look dark and ominous. I looked down at my hand as I pulled my rolling suitcase across the sticky, tiled floor. Not even my hand had acquired a tan. Three months in the Brazilian sun and my skin remained as pale as ever.

Cassandra was looking right at me with wide, unblinking eyes. I walked a little slower.

For some reason I couldn’t pinpoint, coming off the plane felt like a surreal experience to me. Although I was relieved to have landed, and I wouldn’t have wanted to stay in Brazil any longer, I still wasn’t utterly happy with being back. I wondered if it merely had to do with the fact that I had no apartment to go back to and was feeling pretty untethered from not having a proper home.

There’s an old saying. I’m not really sure where it’s from or who said it first. Kind of the proverb equivalent of The House of the Rising Sun. It proffers, “Wherever you go, there you are”, and up until about one month ago I had no idea what it meant. But now it means everything. It rings in my ears like a scolding mother, repeating itself over and over again until I submit.

I finally stood face to face with Cassandra, who was grinning like a fool at this point. She was dressed down for the night, wearing a purple racer-back tank top that showed off her summer glow, jeans, and gold flip-flops. Her blonde hair was pulled into a loose, messy bun and her make-up was minimal, apart from the extra-shiny, coral lip-gloss she was wearing. She reeked of summer.

“Hey,” I offered, looking down at my sneakers. I wished I had more energy for her, but after ten hours on a plane it was all I could muster up.

Cassandra cocked her head to the side and smiled. Her hair swung back and forth and she popped her hip out like a model in training. She looked as fierce as ever, even dressed-down in comfortable summer clothes.

“That’s all I get? Get over here!” she said, pulling me in for a hug.

I hugged her back for a moment and then pulled away, overcome with exhaustion and jet-lag. I smiled at Cassandra. She smelled like a salty coconut and I realized she had probably come straight from Fire Island, a beach not too far from Long Island and just outside of the city. That explained the dressed-down attire, but not the lip-gloss. Unless, of course, we were going straight back there from JFK airport.

I looked back at the gate. Most people I knew hated airports, but I liked them. They offered a chance to escape. Get on a plane and in six hours from now you could be across the country. You could be in a different town, in a different house, with a different group of people. I think we all took that for granted.

I could go back to Brazil right now. Or I could go somewhere else. I’ve never been to Cincinnati; I wonder what it’s like there. Or maybe Savannah. I could definitely live in Savannah! I took a step backwards, away from Cassie. Back toward the inside of the airport. She just smiled.

“Very funny, Amalia!” she said through perfectly white teeth. “Don’t sneak away from me now. I’m so glad you’re back, I really missed you.”

Cassie threw her arm over me and smushed our faces together. She whipped out her iPhone and flipped the camera application around so the front lens could be used and snapped a picture of the two of us. Before I knew it, she uploaded the picture to Facebook with the caption “So excited, Amalia is officially home!”

Without glancing back, she walked a few feet in front of me and remained glued to her phone. The back of her Havaianas smacking onto her heels echoed throughout the now nearly empty hallway. I let out a long sigh that Cassandra didn’t hear and pulled my suitcase toward the exit. Yep, it was official. I was home.

Written Fireside: Of The Storm, Part 7

Have you been following the Halloween flash fiction from these fabulous writers? If not, here are links to catch up on "Of The Storm" before reading part 7, my part! And by the way, isn't this cover awesome? Many thanks to Aileen Harkwood for creating it.

Part 1 by Lori Connelly

Part 2 by Aileen Harkwood

Part 3 by Elise Forier Edie

Part 4 by Paty Jager

Part 5 by Ciara Gold

Part 6 by Traci Douglass

Of The Storm, Part 7:

Minutes later. Maybe hours. Amaya had lost track of how long she and her sister had been waiting inside the detainment chamber in which Tasaria’s guards had tossed them. She’d been pacing, her thoughts processing all that she’d learned even as she demanded more answers from Makani, even as she tried not to imagine what had happened to Bri. A glance at her watch showed it was two hours until midnight. At midnight, Samhain would end, and Tasaria would lose her opportunity to use the Torc. It was only a matter of time before the deceptive queen came for them.

“None of this makes sense.” She pressed a hand to her forehead, the annoying ache from earlier making it difficult to think. “We’re human. That’s all. We’re not some kind of sídhe royalty.” Their blood was too diluted.

“You know we’re not simply human.” Makani sat in the corner, absently fingering the ring on her hand. “Blaike said—”

“Blaike is a demon, Makani.” Amaya whirled on her heels to keep from strangling her sister. “Right now, I don’t trust anyone, least of all a demon. You know what he did to you two years ago. I can’t believe you were seeing him again and you didn’t think to mention it to me.”

“Tasaria was blackmailing him into obtaining the Torc then. He was supposed to seduce me, deceive me into giving it to him. Instead, he fell in love with me and went to war with Tasaria, risking everything to protect me. To protect us. You saw what happened tonight.”

Blaike’s army had surrounded them, not with menace, but in protection. It made no sense, unless everything Makani believed was true.

Makani stood, her warm hand settling on Amaya’s arm. Her voice softened. “Years ago Tasaria sent Brishen to try to get the Torc from you, only he fell in love with you the first moment he saw you. Brishen knew the best way to protect you was to lie to Tasaria and pretend you and he felt only disdain for each other. After Blaike declared war on Tasaria, Bri went to him in secret and began feeding him information to help defeat the queen. Anyway. After they both failed to bring her the Torc, she began planning to take it by force this Samhain. She’s power mad and wants to be ruler of both the human and sídhe dimensions. Blaike and Brishen have secretly been working together to protect us for longer than either of us have been aware, Amaya. Trust me.”

“What? No.” Amaya shook her head, scowling at her sister. “Bri doesn’t love me.” He’d never attempted to seduce her. Not once. Not even when she'd wanted him to, if she were honest with herself.

“He’s still alive, sis. So is Blaike. I feel it. Don’t you?” Makani moved her hand to Amaya’s chest, where the heartbeat beneath seemed to kick up its pace thinking about Bri. "Tasaria needs them alive as leverage to force us to do the ritual. They might be wounded, but they're alive."

Yes. Amaya did feel some sort of connection to Bri. Felt his life source thrumming through her veins, faint, but there. How she knew it was his, she had no idea.

Unless.

Bri’s words echoed through her thoughts. The Torc was infused with the blood of the True Seelie King, binding it forever to those pure rulers of the bloodline.

“Makani, if we’re the pure rulers of the bloodline…” They should have use of the same magic as, perhaps even stronger than Tasaria's.

Her sister’s mouth curved into a knowing smile. “Now she gets it.” She lifted her hand and the ring glinted unnaturally in the light. “The amulet and Torc aren’t the only artifacts in our possession that have power. Blaike infused my ring with a protection spell, too.”

A surge of hope raced along Amaya's nerve endings, and something else. Something electric had stirred inside her. Magic. Now if she could only remember all of the books she'd been forced to study so she knew how to use it.

The door opened, and one of Tasaria’s behemoth guards, weapon at the ready, glanced between them. “The queen requests your presence at the Seelie Court.”

Amaya watched as her sister—her fun-loving, often self-absorbed and flighty older sister—lifted the ring, murmured a chant, and crumpled the hulking guard to the ground without batting an eyelash. Flipping her hair, Makani turned to her.

“Now. Why don’t we go rescue our men and claim our throne once and for all?”

6 reasons to read SPIRITED AWAY this Halloween!

It's the last post in my Halloween Reads week, and some might say I saved the best for last. Today, I give you a handful of awesome reasons to read SPIRITED AWAY, the latest release in my psychic detectives series.

The third book in my psychic detectives series, SPIRITED AWAY is a fun book to read this October (or anytime, really), because Halloween is almost here and who doesn't love a little ghost story at Halloween? Here are just a few reasons why you should buy a copy right now and start reading it…

No. 1. The pets are back! Abbott (the cat) and Costello (the goofy dog) and Charlie (the mischievous dog) in this series are once again up to their shenanigans. Spider is house- and pet-sitting the animals, and they aren't making it easy for her because they are doing what they do best – causing mischief! If you have pets, you'll probably get a kick out of this book simply reading about these three alone.

No. 2. Spider is the heroine of this book. I know what you're thinking. The heroine's name is Spider?!? Weirdo. Well, yes, she is. She is also awesome. And funny. Or so I like to think. She's also quirky, smart, geeky, sarcastic and sometimes adorkable. And she manages to get herself into trouble without even trying, uh, a few times.

No. 3. And the hero of the story, Noah West, seems to always come to her rescue when she's at her worst. Since he's a total hottie by Spider's standards, that makes it even more embarrassing (and kind of funnier..he he). He's also very mysterious, which makes him even more fascinating. Just sayin'.

No. 4. There are funnies, but there is also a ghost mystery here. Nothing too spooky, but it's up to Spider to help Noah rid his house of the threatening spirits harassing him. To do so, they must discover what happened there in the past, and nothing is ever that easy. Plus, there's more to the haunting than it seems.

No. 5. Feelings. This book has them. While they might seem like complete opposites, Spider and Noah end up connecting in ways neither ever expected, and it's kind of emotional at times. Or so reviewers have said.

See what I did just then. Sorry. Couldn't resist. :-)

No. 6. Speaking of reviewers, 100 percent of the 10 people who have reviewed it so far on Goodreads liked this book!

Here's what they said.

"May be because I love anything to do with animals, and love books with animals in them... May be because Spider was a computer nerd... No matter what, I enjoyed this book a lot more than the first two." ✯✯✯✯

"This is my first book by this author and I absolutely loved it. A tough but vulnerable heroine with lots of crazy situations and a very hot neighbor that always seems to catch her at her worst. They end up thrown together as they face paranormal events. This provides plenty of humor and mystery. Laugh out loud funny, but totally engaging mystery." ✯✯✯✯✯

"This book will keep you hooked from start to finish. It will make you laugh and cry and everything in between." ✯✯✯✯✯
There you have it. Thank you for stopping by to check out why my books make for great reads this time of year. In case you're interested, here's the book cover and synopsis and a little bonus for anyone who's read the story!

***

Socially awkward Emma “Spider” Fisher prefers her laptop to people, so she’s more than happy to oblige her boss when he asks her to pet- and housesit while he honeymoons in London.

It doesn’t take long for accident-prone Spider to lose a dog, get locked out of the house, and set off the house alarm. Thankfully, her hot new neighbour is more than happy to come to her rescue.

But Noah West is a mystery to Spider—and one she intends to solve. Because either the man is seriously living in a haunted house, or he’s a serial killer. Either way, he’s a total hottie, so Spider will have to guard her heart while she and the animals sniff out the truth.

7 reasons to read SOMETHING WICKED in October

Happy hump day! Thanks for stopping by for my Halloween Reads week and checking out all of the awesome reasons to read my books this month. Today, you're in for a treat, because SOMETHING WICKED is being spotlighted.

The second book in my psychic detectives series, SOMETHING WICKED, is the most obvious in the series to read in October, because Halloween is almost here. This book, out of all I've written, boasts all of the spooky goodness Halloween fans are probably looking for. Here are just a few reasons why you should buy a copy right now and get to reading it…

No. 1. Ghosts. Ghosts are literally everywhere in SOMETHING WICKED. The book's heroine is Alexandra King, a psychic medium who communicates with ghosts, and even better, she's visiting Charleston, South Carolina — one of the oldest cities in the United States, and reportedly one of the most haunted. When she realizes a serial killer who calls himself The Grim Reaper is running around,   she utilizes the city's ghosts to track him down — and discovers a connection between The Grim Reaper and the city's ghosts in the process.

No. 2.  Not only are there ghosts. But wait! There's also "something wicked" loose in the city, something creepy and unknown that tries turning the ghosts against Alexandra to interfere with her investigation.

No. 3. It has Dylan Collins, a yummy homicide detective as the hero (who I might have physically modeled after Ian Somerhalder), who is a skeptic of all things paranormal — but that doesn't mean he doesn't step in to try to help Alexandra when she needs it the most. Not that she does, much, because Alexandra is more than capable of taking care of herself. Well, mostly. Either way, the chemistry between them is electric!

No. 4. Did I mention it's set in Charleston, South Carolina — which is one of the most beautiful cities in America, IMO. Read the book to explore why it's a romantic city to visit.

No. 5. The book is also set around the end of September/beginning of October!  What better time to read it?

No. 6. Before you question whether this book sounds too scary for you, let me reassure you there's plenty of comic relief to balance out any spooky bits. I promise.

No. 7. And finally, the reviews for this book are overwhelmingly positive. For example, 98% of the 48 people who've rated it on Goodreads liked it. Here are a sample of some of the reviews on Amazon.

"Overall, I really enjoyed this book and thought the ghost and serial killer plot was fantastic! It was like watching a scary movie where there were scenes that gave you chills, and Alexandra was a heroine that I could not help but root for!" ✯✯✯✯✯

"The author kept it interesting with the banter and flirtation between the main characters and the supporting cast (specifically the Charleston ghosts) was also very entertaining. It wasn’t too dark, was steamy but not raunchy and had a good amount of action."  ✯✯✯✯
"My thoughts are… AMAZING!

I absolutely loved Something Wicked. I loved the characters, the plot, the supernatural aspect, everything. I have nothing I would change or add, it was just awesome!" ✯✯✯✯✯
There you have it. Seven reasons I think you should read "Something Wicked" this month, like, maybe starting today. It is the second book in the series, but I am pretty confident it can be read as a standalone.

Seriously, I know it might sound conceited, but I really like this book. A lot. And I think you will like it too, especially if you're a fan of paranormal suspense with kickass heroines and sexy heroes. Just sayin'.

***

Something wicked this way comes…

All homicide detective Dylan Collins wants is a few hours of pleasure to take his mind off of the case haunting him. A serial killer is stalking the streets of Charleston, SC – a killer who calls himself The Grim Reaper. When the woman he'd just spent the night with turns up and offers her services as a psychic consultant on the case, his ardor quickly cools. Last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a con artist.

It doesn't take long for Dylan to realize Alexandra King is the real deal – and the killer's next target. Dylan's protective instincts battle his reluctance to get too involved with a woman he isn't sure he can trust. As they get closer to finding the killer, they also grow closer to one another, but will Alexandra's secret agenda destroy their chance at happiness – if the killer doesn't strike first?

6 reasons to read ON THE SCENT!

Today I continue my Halloween Reads week by giving you reasons to read all three books in my psychic detectives series this month! Seriously, you should read these books, and October is a great time to do it!

First up is the first book in the series, ON THE SCENT. It's not the most obvious in the series to read in October, but there are few good reasons you should. Here are just a few reasons why…

No. 1. Abbott and Costello! No, no, not the comedians from the 40s and 50s. However, ON THE SCENT features a cat and dog duo named after those guys, and I've gotten so many reader emails about my feline/canine Abbott and Costello, I sometimes wonder if anyone noticed the human characters in the story.

No. 2. The sexy private detective hero is psychic and can communicate with Abbott and Costello, and much hilarity ensues as a result. Plus, I modeled Zachary Collins after Henry Cavill in the looks department, so there.

No. 3. Romance! And suspense! Zachary is hired to protect Hannah, Abbott and Costello's beautiful new owner, who is in charge of the animals' fortune. Someone is after Hannah and her pets, and while Zach tries to determine who, and why, he fights his feelings for his new client.

No. 4. Perhaps the best reason to read ON THE SCENT in October is because it introduces characters who will appear in SOMETHING WICKED and SPIRITED AWAY, and well, you can read each book as a standalone, sure, but why not read them all, starting with book one? And the cast of characters is pretty awesome, if I say so myself. And I mentioned the hero of ON THE SCENT looks something like this, right?

No. 5. I'm still donating partial proceeds to animal rescue! Yep, that's right. So far I have donated more than $500 to help cats and dogs in animal rescue groups in my hometown. So if you read this book, you're donating to a worthy cause. And probably saving a life. Just sayin'.

No. 6. Plenty of readers have already enjoyed the book! Here are a sample of some of the reviews on Amazon...

"Loved it. Great characters, great animals, great mystery. Could not put it down." ✯✯✯✯✯
"That blurb alone (as well as being a romance) was enough for me to download this book. I loved the characters, Hannah and Zach, but especially Abbot and Costello. I had several laugh out loud moments and just enjoyed the book."  ✯✯✯✯✯
"On the Scent by Angela Campbell is one of those books that keeps you excited about what's going to happen next."  ✯✯✯✯✯
"Angela Campbell is definitely a reader’s best friend. This is one fantastic adventure." - Night Owl Reviews - A Top Pick!

So there you have it — six reasons to read ON THE SCENT this month.  And now, the blurb:

***

Book 1 in the brilliantly witty ‘Psychic Detective’ series from Angela Campbell – perfect for fans of Janet Evanovich & Stephanie Plum!

Hannah Dawson has a big problem: she’s just become the unexpected owner of a snarky cat, a loveable but not-so-bright dog… and their $10 million fortune!

Which would be awesome if it hadn’t made her the target of every wacko in the metro Atlanta area. Now Hannah and her famous pets need protecting and there’s only one man who can help them…

Enter Zachary Collins: ex-TV star of ‘The Psychic Detective’ and street-wise private investigator – all 6 foot blue-eyed gorgeousness!

Only Zach’s got secrets of his own – not least that he finds his new client irresistibly hot. The more time he spends keeping Hannah out of harm’s way, the more he’s tempted to give in to the attraction… even if it means breaking all his own rules.

7 reasons to read CRY WOLF this month

It’s finally October — my favorite month because I love the cooler weather, changing of season, orange and red leaves, pumpkins, Halloween decorations, ghost stories and scary movies! I figured, what better way to celebrate than giving you reasons to read my books this month! I know. I know. Just go with it.

This week I plan to give you reasons to read each of my books in October, and I’m starting by going back to my debut novel, CRY WOLF. Haven’t heard of it? Well you should have! It’s a great book to read in October, and here’s why…

No. 1. It’s set around Halloween! That’s right. Halloween actually plays a pretty big role, as it’s the reason the editor of the book’s heroine, reporter Andrea Lockhart, sends her to a sleepy South Carolina town to investigate bizarre sightings of a werewolf-like creature.

No. 2. Andrea is just as skeptical of the topic as you probably are right now. And Andrea can bring the snark, especially because she absolutely doesn’t want to cover a story about a supposed werewolf — because she doesn’t believe werewolves exist either. And funny, bizarre things happen to her as soon as she sets foot in the town, including running into her college nemesis, Sean Hunter, who is the editor of the local newspaper in this sleepy little town.

No. 3. Sean is sexy, and he refuses to leave Andrea alone during her investigation, which leads to…

No. 4. A total Lois-Clark dynamic that happens between the two of them as they reluctantly team up to determine what people keep seeing. There is attraction that they fight, but because this book is romance, you and I both know they can’t fight it for long.

No. 5. There are funnies. Bizarre things keep happening to Andrea that will probably make you laugh, along with her reaction to them (I hope). But there aren’t just funnies. Oh no.

No. 6. There is also suspense!

Actually, you won’t have nightmares forever (I hope), but I have been told the climax of the book gets a bit tense and puts readers on edge. So, you might actually feel like this a time or two, but nothing major. I hope.

And No. 7. You will find out what eyewitnesses have reported seeing. It looks something like this.

So there you have it. Seven reasons to read CRY WOLF if you haven’t already. It was my first book, so keep that in mind if you are an uber critical reader. I don’t know. I enjoyed the story, and I even enjoyed listening to the audiobook version of it too because Elizabeth Wiley does a great job on the narration.

Just sayin.’

But don't take my word for it. Here are some reviews from Amazon:

"It's a fun read, with a romance that feels rather realistic (including sexy bits, if you're at all concerned about that), and a kitten. How could it not be good when there's a rescued kitten? I don't think it's possible." ✯✯✯✯

"I really enjoyed the different take on the werewolf myth. The story kept me guessing right up until the end and I loved the characters."  ✯✯✯✯

"I had a great time reading this. The small town setting was perfect for the mysterious werewolf sightings. It was fun following Andi and Sean on their investigation and meeting all of the quirky townspeople. And the story definitely keeps you guessing right up to the very end." ✯✯✯✯

***

Andrea Lockhart's job as a reporter for cheesy tabloid The Naked Truth isn't exactly where she thought her journalism career would end up. She's determined to make the best of it, but when her editor sends her to Woodbine, South Carolina, to investigate a werewolf sighting, Andrea decides the ridiculous assignment will be her last. Until she meets Sean Hunter.

The last time she saw Sean, he had just beat her out for the position of editor of their college newspaper, and told her she'd never make it as a reporter. Given his grand ambitions, she's shocked to find him editing the Woodbine Weekly. Once they start competing for leads on the werewolf, Andrea becomes determined to break the story first—she can't let Sean beat her again.

As they each get closer to finding the source of the rumors, the only thing more surprising than the truth are the feelings Sean is able to stir in her, feelings she thought she had left behind...
